Devil May Cry is a twelve episode anime, the adaptation embodiment of a franchise originating with a series of video games that quickly spawned novels, manag and eventually a full anime.
The hero of our little drama is Dante, the owner and proprietor of the Devil May Cry detective agency. A half demon that specializes in eliminating the otherworldly problems that his clients bring to his door, Dante still seems to find himself in constant financial straits. The issues doesn't seem to much concern him however, as he appears to prefer a simple life where he is able to eat his pizzas and strawberry sundaes in peace. Peace is not something that seems to be in the cards for Dante though, as his supposed partner Morrison is constantly bringing in a stream of new jobs to his door. This is likely a positive given Dante's low initiative however, and let’s face it; pizza and strawberry sundaes aren't free right?
Make no mistake about it, this is an action-oriented anime and anyone looking for a deep and meaningful plot need look elsewhere. Most of the anime itself consists of Dante and his small group of friends taking cases from random clients that are in no way connected from one episode to the next. That's not to say that the anime itself does not have an overarching story line, though it is only in the last three episodes the creators of the series try their best to piece an overall plot together, but I must confess that it comes off more than a little rushed. As though they suddenly decided that they needed a purpose for it all; though all considered it is nice that they made the gesture to try to end the series on some high note rather then have it be just another episode.
Anyone who wants a nice dose of action should give this anime a look, and while some may look at the lack of complexity as a negative, there are days when you just want some action without a lot of complex plot twist and turns to burden it, and this anime more then fills that bill. Even without a complex plot, Dante comes off as a lovable character that you just can not help but to pull for while his supporting cast just seems to add more depth to the mix. While Trish and Lady return as regulars to provide a sort of love interest for our hero, new comers Patty Lowell (an orphan that Dante rescues in the first episode) and Morrison add a lot of depth to the supporting cast. The characters are truly what makes this series shine.
While I would not suggest this for a younger audience, I would say that if you want a healthy dose of action and have a couple hours to kill. This anime is just what the doctor ordered. While it might not make the top of my list for the greatest anime of all time, I would say that I would watch it again if I was bored one day and the mood struck me solely based on the quality of the animation and characters.
